Wollemi Creek - Oct 2014
This was an exploratory walk for a much longer walk from Newnes to Colo River. We've had a few half hearted attempts at doing this walk but this time we were serious. We set out and arrived at Culoul Ridge car park. We headed down the fire trail and found the branch track off to the right. We followed this for about half an hour and then came to an intersection. We took the left track as we had been warned about a northerly descent into Wollemi Creek was a false one. Half about 20 minutes we came to the end of the fire trail. We followed a foot track from the fire trail that quickly petered out. After half an hour of scouting for a track we decided to go back to the fire trail. We rested for a while and consulted the map. We decided to back track to the intersection and take the Northern track. We followed this relatively well worn track until it came to spectactular look out over Wollemi Creek (Crawford's Lookout). We tracked South for a few hundred metres and found a steep track that would lead us down to the river. It required much scrambling and took us about an hour to reach the bottom. After a cool swim in the water I rested and explored the bottom of the river for about two hours and then headed back up cliff wall. It took two hours to reach the top of the very, very steep climb. After a short rest we then continued back along the trail and then back to the vehicle. This was a quite a tiring walk.
